How Artmaking Transforms Triggers

Hello Creative Soul,

Did you know that artmaking can transform triggers by giving our internal experiences an external, creative outlet, which can shift how we relate to difficult emotions?

Here’s how it works:

1. Externalization of the Inner World

When we create, we take what’s inside - confusion, pain, anger, fear - and move it out onto a page, a print or a canvas. This creates emotional distance, which helps us observe our feelings rather than be overwhelmed by them.

2. Regulation Through Process

The rhythmic, sensory act of making art - mark making, mixing colors, tearing paper - helps regulate the nervous system. This makes the body feel safer, which reduces the intensity of the triggered state.

3. Meaning-Making and Integration

Art helps us find narrative, symbolism, and metaphor in what might feel chaotic. It doesn’t require words, but it often reveals truths we were not consciously aware of. This helps us integrate experiences, especially ones that are hard to talk about.

4. Agency and Empowerment

When we transform a trigger into art, we reclaim control. We are no longer passive recipients. We become active participants in shaping our response to it.

5. Connection and Witnessing

Sharing our art can invite empathy and support. Even when kept private, it offers us a way to witness and hold space for ourselves. We are no longer just wounded, but rather productive, resilient and creative too.
